The festive season is upon us, and it’s the perfect time to stay healthy this festive season using the 80-20 approach. Our family just celebrated Diwali this week and with more celebrations ahead like Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year, balance is key. Maybe you are already feeling a little anxious about maintaining your health habits through all the celebrations. Or perhaps you have decided to put your routines on hold until January 2026. But what if I told you that you can continue your healthy habits without missing out on the festivities by following a simple 80-20 rule?
The idea is simple: focus on your healthy habits 80% of the time and give yourself permission to enjoy life fully the other 20%. It’s not about perfection, it’s about balance and flexibility. For example, I love my morning meditation but I also love sleeping in on Saturdays. On weekdays, I follow my 5 AM routine with meditation and gentle stretches. On Saturday, I get up an hour later and shorten my meditation to under 10 minutes. The habit remains but there’s room for flexibility.
Here’s how you can apply the 80-20 approach during festive periods:
Morning Routine: 80% keep your usual meditation or stretch; 20% sleep an extra hour or shorten the practice on weekends or festive mornings.
Meals: eat nourishing meals most of the time but 20% enjoy a sweet, dessert or festive treat guilt-free.
Movement: continue with your walk, stretch or do yoga daily; 20% skip or do a shorter session if celebrations or travel get in the way.
Mindful Moments: 80% practice journaling, breathwork or quiet reflection; 20% indulge in moments of pure joy and relaxation
By following this mindful 80-20 approach, you can stay healthy this festive season without missing out on the celebrations. Small, mindful choices create a foundation for wellbeing and yes, you can still savour Diwali sweet, Thanksgiving treat or Christmas cake.
Remember, health doesn’t have to wait until January. A little consistency plus a little flexibility, is enough to keep you happy and enjoy the festivities.
